In this awe-inspiring debut, Robert Jones, Jr.,’s inventiveness with form and language is matched by his profound emotional acuity. Swirling around this powerful love story is a kaleidoscopic array of characters we enter the worlds and minds of the enslaved, the enslavers, the female kings and male wives in Kosongo territory in the ancestral homeland. Their passion for each other, the dignity they bestow on each other, the small world they create and protect together, forms the core of the book. But there is, at the center of The Prophets, amid the grief and horror, a refuge: the relationship between Isaiah and Samuel, two young men enslaved on the Mississippi plantation known as Empty. This is a devastating book, an evocation of and reckoning with the deep stain of slavery. In The Prophets, Robert Jones, Jr., nimbly navigates this delicate interplay between the epic and the microscopic, between historical crises and interpersonal ones. A surprising gesture, a subtle moment of duplicity, an unlikely flash of kindness, conjured so vividly that it haunts me long after I finish reading. Books that explore the deepest questions about life and love and death and history and identity-and that animate these questions by way of infinitesimal human interactions. I crave books that are simultaneously attentive to the big things and the little things.

Alison hoards food for her lost brother, hides in the back yard fort they built together, and waits for him to return. This is Smith's extraordinary account of the impact of that loss - on herself, on her parents, and on a deeply religious community.Īt home, Alison and her parents sleepwalk in shifts. But on a cool summer morning when Alison was fifteen, she woke to learn that Roy, eighteen, was dead. A luminous, true story, Name All the Animals is an unparalleled account of grief and secret love: the tale of a family clinging to the memory of a lost child, and a young woman struggling to define herself in the wake of his loss.Īs children, siblings Alison and Roy Smith were so close that their mother called them by one name: Alroy. Her parents, the king and queen, were well aware of Cimorene’s stubbornness and decided something needed to be done about her, and quickly. When she was told that her actions were not proper and certain things were “just not done” by a princess, she had perfectly valid argument she was a princess and she was doing those things, therefore those things were done by at least one princess. She did not want to waste time with embroidery, dancing and etiquette. She wanted to learn magic, take fencing lessons and cook. Her six older sisters were typical princesses, but not Cimorene. Princess Cimorene found the whole princess thing completely unbearable. Lovers of humor, fantasy or books with a strong female lead will not be disappointed. I cannot recommend this excellent and highly entertaining series enough. Talking to Dragons (1985) was published first and had three subsequent prequels, with Searching for Dragons (1991) and Calling on Dragons (1993) completing the series. Chronologically it takes place first in The Enchanted Forest Chronicles, which consists of four books. Fans of Tamora Pierce, Diana Winn Jones, Bruce Coville, or Terry Pratchet should thoroughly enjoy Patrica Wrede as well.ĭealing with Dragons is one of my favorite middle readers in any genre. Her writing is fast paced and wry her characters are interesting and witty and the worlds she creates are fully formed and ever so appealing. Patricia Wrede (pronounced REE-dee) is a fantasy writer, and a fantastic storyteller. The show includes far too many elegiac shots of Gates walking among the palmettos with his stylish cane. At times, the show feels like a bit of a side hustle. Gates, last prominently seen sharing a beer at the Obama White House with the Massachusetts cop who arrested him while he was trying to break into his own house, prepared this series as a sort-of companion piece to his book Stony The Road, released this month. Part straight history, part polemic, it reframes the history of black life in America, and American life in general, through an angry but also hopeful lens. ‘Reconstruction,’ a new four-hour documentary series from Henry Louis Gates, Jr., is the year’s most intellectually nutritious offering. The focus is exclusively on JavaScript, which is just one of the languages the web developer must master. This is not a book about Ajax or web programming. Someday I hope to write a JavaScript: The First Parts book, but this is not that book. Instead, this book just contains the things that are really important. It doesn’t contain everything you’ll ever need to know. It is not exhaustive about the language and its quirks. JavaScript is a surprisingly powerful language. It is also intended for programmers who have been working with JavaScript at a novice level and are now ready for a more sophisticated relationship with the language. It is intended for programmers who, by happenstance or curiosity, are venturing into JavaScript for the first time. This is a book about the JavaScript programming language. (I love teaching, but you know teachers will be judged more hushly ) ) For me - I would wish to use it later, for quick reference and also may form a basis of a course I may want to teach anywhere. But I recommend, grub your copy, read it! It's a small 172 page book, surely you can read :) For someone who thinks he will rather read code than read a book. This is for anyone who might have read the book but will prefer just perusing through some notes. I'm going through Douglas Crockford's (May, 2008) book once again, and felt like it's good I document my notes (and thoughts) within code examples. His body was found by the side of the road with two holes in his forehead not caused by a bullet.
